2d sketch-to-curves modeling

I'm a 3d modeler who has used SketchUp for the last two decades, and I love how easily I can draw shapes with a pen tool and extrude them into 3d forms. Unfortunately SU is a dinosaur program seriously lacking in features and lately, Trimble (the company that makes SU) decided to make the free version web-based so you can't even use plugins anymore. In short SU "SUcks," and I want to go with something else.

I decided to revisit Blender since the 2.8 update because I saw they improved the grease pencil and you can now do 2d animation. Even tho the new 2d tools look awesome it looks like converting what has been drawn to 3d is a difficult process. I could be mistaken since I don't really know Blender very well, but the videos I watched and the tutorials I saw appear convoluted.

So, if Blender made some kind of quick 2d sketch to 3d form without applying modifiers and flipping workspace screens that to me would make Blender the most awesome 3d program evar! My developer wishlist is based off these amazing technology proposals of sketch-to curve-based modeling all conveniently listed on this page right here...

Ideas like True2Form, ILoveSketch, SecondSkin make creating complex and organic shapes with a couple pentool strokes is so freaking easy it could totally replace having to sculpt or model these things out.

Please Blender guys try and implement this... contact these guys developing this tech... it would be a godsend to the type of modeling I'd like to do and most familiar with. I'm not a box-modeller, I'm not sculptor. Something like this would help me greatly.

Unless you want something very specific, it's already possible to sketch using regular curves or Grease Pencil curves and then convert them to mesh objects. These features work in any 3D Viewport, regardless of the workspace you're using. It's mostly a matter of understanding how Blender works.

* @Jason van Gumster * What about converting annotations to curves / geometry? That would be very quick and useful. Especially for drawing on surfaces.

* @John * That's why we have Grease Pencil objects. The current Annotations feature is what Grease Pencil used to be. Aside from writing on other editors (like the Compositor, there isn't anything you can do with Annotations that you can't also do with Grease Pencil objects.
