Binding more mouse buttons

It seems to me Blender v2.79b is limited to 7 mouse buttons. The decade old Logitech Revolution MX mouse that I use already comes with 11 buttons, with button ids from 1 to 17 (skipping some, apparently). I propose Blender should make it possible to bind any of those to actions, just like it permits binding infinite keyboard keys.

A simple explicit drop listing mouse buttons from one to dozens probably wouldn't be manageable, so maybe a mechanism akin to binding keyboards buttons would be the way to go.

Also created developer.blender.org/T56485 , which got closed as it's not a bug per se.

I don't want to bind my trackball's extra buttons to key presses. Blender supports as many inputs as they can here.

I have no programming background at all, but I think if I try I might break it, but it looks like a rather simple issue related to lacking support past button 7.

While mapping mouse buttons to keyboard keys is a doable workaround, I would still say this should be supported natively in Blender. There's already support up to button 7, after all. That mouse buttons had to be explicit in the first place was slightly a poor [technical] design choice.

I don't know what the state of button remapping is on Linux, but I'm sure it's not as elegant as Logitech's solutions on Windows are. Probably none of the Linux solutions work per-app either.

@andri: That's interesting. I didn't even realize that you could map more than 3 buttons on a mouse in blender. There is definitely button mapping software for linux. Like you, I'm not sure that it is app aware, though.

There is software that lets you assign keystrokes and key macros to each button on the mouse. Just assign each button some key combination you would never use on the keyboard, something like Alt+CTRL+Shift+F12+Spacebar, and assign the same key combo in Blender's keymap editor.
