A bit easier boolean workflow!

This is very straight forward and intuitive that I don't know why its not in blender yet!

Without further due, lets get into it:

Say you want to make a Boolean operation, we all know that Boolean is a 2 objects operation, so why don't we have one or two of the following approaches:

[] Approach A

1- First select the object we will have to pick in Boolean modifier, then the object in which the modifier will be applied to.

2- simply go to the modifiers panel and then choose Boolean from the list and blender will apply the modifier to the active object, and pick the object we selected first in the object field in Boolean modifier ( blender will create as many modifiers as required [the number of selected objects - 1])

[] Approach B

we all know that to shortly make a subdiv modifier we can simply hit ctrl+ 1 or 2 or 3 etc, and blender will create a modifier for us and the subdivision level will be equal to the number we choose (ctrl+2) etc

In the light of this approach; here is our Boolean approach:

1- First select the object we have to pick in Boolean modifier, then the object in which the modifier will be applied to.

2-hit alt + 1 or 2 or 3 to apply Boolean modifier on the active object, taking the selected objects into count as a picked objects ( if more than one, it will create the required amount of Boolean modifiers "the number of selected objects").

now take in mind that the numbers 1, 2, 3, we pressed with Alt at first will determine the Boolean type, whether it is ( Difference, union, intersect)

Other things we can take in mind:

In the second approach we can let blender hide or delete the helping objects for us, and only keep the active object, we can tell blender whether to hide or delete the objects like this:

alt+ 1/2/3 will hide the objects. alt+shift+ 1/2/3 will delete the objects alt+shit+ctrl +1/2/3 will make the objects only outline and hidden in render.

This will save us a lot of steps and a huge amount of time when working on a project that heavily uses Booleans ! Thanks!

I agree that a simplified workflow should be a part of blender without having to enable addons. I think it would be great to have both A and B. B is an especially good approach. Maybe we can have more modifiers on the number keys. This could extend to bevel and other modifiers maybe.

Btw. On Alt+1 I have select ring, Alt+2 - select loop, Alt+3 - subdivide selection, etc.. Because this is what I use in my workflow for lot. If u need some keymapping - you can make it for your sef. Blender is a goddamn Customization Machine - customize whatever you want. Any hotkeys, macros, PIEs ..

If you really looking for fast way to work around booleans - this addon already alive ( it also have " live boolean " ... ). If you ask to remap def. keys for some quick booleans - in my case ( for many other users as well) this Alt+1,2,3.. to bool A to B was just another " First to remap after install " thing.

@forestgumpovu4: Okay, I understand that you have occupied this shortcut with what you think will speedup your workflow, which is great, and I believe that many ppl out there has done the same, but that's not a good argument, because If we use the same logic. non of 2.8 new keymap changes would have been agreed on!

What I'm trying to do by this post is simple, blender is intuitive, it has tons of hidden features that you can discover by yourself, and I thouught that my approach can be one of those, we can argue about what shortcuts to use for the B approach, but I think that we need such a workflow in blender, just like its already there for subdiv etc,

so If your objection is about shortcuts, its fine, I don't think that its a must.

@arch.khader: just try to say that - some hotkeys for some macros it is something from customization opera. Some users of Blender never use booleans at work...

And again.

  • This addon alive, it work, it is good, it have " live boolean", it is PIE based, it is free & can be included to BOX Blender version.
  • This PIE solution save keys. You have one key for lot of similar actions all together.
  • This PIE solution fast and intuitive as it possible. For most used actons in " BOX version" and my own custom PIEs I just press one button and move mouse to some dirrection not even look at this PIE because I do this action thousands of times. It just take half of second, maybe even less...

I have nothing against you & your suggestion. Just IMHO - if you at your workflow just need to speed up and less clicking - create macros and link it to whatever you want.

@forestgumpovu4: and there is booltools and cube cutter etc, but what I'm proposing here is aiming to be a part of blender's default workflow/ keymap. it doesn't require any addon, or dedicated menu, that's the deference.
