Include native Origin menu without 3d viewport pie menu add-on
Currently, the only way to access the Origin menu is to enable the free, included add-on called Interface: 3D Viewport Pie Menus (search for pie in the add-on preferences). I noticed that when I disable this add-on, the Origin menu shortcut Ctrl + Alt + X does nothing!
In my opinion, this is a serious oversight given that the origin menu is sooo valuabe and such an important one to access (being able to set mesh origins to selections without using the 3d cursor for example should not be hidden behind an add-on)! Much like how deleting something in edit mode by pressing X brings up the menu of deletion options or pressing Shift + S to bring up the 3d cursor snap menu regardless to whether the pie menu add-on is installed or not, I feel this should be the same treatment regarding the Origin menu!

This might be slightly misleading. When you disable an add-on that adds menus, itβs natural that those specific menus won't be available anymore. However, this doesn't mean the operators proposed by that menu aren't already present in Blender. In fact, you can find the most common operators in two places.
From Right π±οΈ menu:
Or from the header menu:
We do miss two operators, as mentioned by normolsen, but see my comment there.
Additionally, I find it interesting to consider calling this situation " a serious oversight ". The features themselves are not missing in Blender; the user experience is simply different. Furthermore, it raises the question of whether Blender should make it up for 'quality-of-life enhancement' features from add-ons when you don't enable them, especially those shipped out of the box. Isn't the very purpose of having these add-ons to provide such enhancements?
Yeah, I realized after my post that I wasn't clear enough.. That's why my other response makes note of two missing origin features when comparing the pie menu version vs the regular menu version. My bad. I was speaking specifically with regards to the pie menus (though I admittedly wasn't aware of the origin menus tucked into the right-click contextual menu)! So I suppose it's not a serious oversight given that this info is indeed available at the mouse's finger tips so to speak!
Having said all this, I don't feel it's natural that this shortcut doesn't bring up a non radial pie menu equivalent. I still personally think that this should appear with Ctrl + Alt + X when the 3D Viewport Pie Menus add-on isn't installed (much like the given Shift + S menu for the 3d cursor). Would feel more consistent/natural IMO. I only noticed this menu was missing without the add-on earlier.. and here I am telling people to simply press the origin menu shortcut to access all things origin related (not realizing that if they don't have that add-on installed, this shortcut does nothing). One might counter that it might be redundant to keep the origin menu since it's in the right-click menu.. But given that extruding can not only be found when right clicking, but Alt + E also offers an extrude only mini menu, there's room to keep the origin menu regardless as to whether the add-on is installed or not. Just thinking out loud here.
You are always free to make your own shortcuts to your liking ;)
AFAIK since v2.80, the Blender Foundation's stand on keymap is to keep it minimal so to leave room for customization (see #55194 - Shortcut Keys Changed in 2.8x - blender - Blender Projects ).
Prior to that, the keymap used to be so cluttered you barely could make new shortcuts, and we had some atrocious ones like β Ctrl β Alt β§ Shift C to bring the
Convert Tomenu.Hence, I doubt the BF would consider adding an entry to the keymap for the sole reason of matching to an addon. The only reason why some shortcuts bring similar operators with and without the PIE Menus addon is because the addon aligned itself to existing shortctuts, not the other way around.
Of course, these are just my thoughts, I'm not from the Blender Foundation.
Thanks for sharing your insights/thoughts... much appreciated! :) I guess it boils down to different design philosophies. Much like yourself, I too am not from the Blender Foundation. All we can really do is voice our opinions on these platforms, and if the powers that be agree that changes need to be made.. so be it.. otherwise, better luck next time. Β―_(γ)_/Β―
Additionally, there are 2 features from the Origin pie menu that is NOT included within the Object > Set Origin sub menu found within the top left hand side of the viewport. Origin to Selected and Origin to Bottom. Including these into the Set Origin viewport menu would complete and fix the lack on consistency between this and the Origin pie menu!
It's what we used to do manually with the 3D Cursor. But yes, these two could definitely be moved to vanilla Blender so that the addon only brings the UX of pies and nothing else.
