Proportional Edit only selected loop

It is common to want to use proportional editing selectively, such as on 1 edge loop, but not the ones adjacent to it. Currently this is accomplished by hiding all geometry except the loop you are working on. But this makes the editing difficult, as you lose your reference to the adjacent loop, and waste a lot of time hiding and unhiding things.

An option to have proportional edit masking of some sort would be good, or to have an option for it to only affect the current selection, and base the edit off the active selection, instead of the usual behavior of basing it on the entire selection.

I have also thought a lot about that and would be personally happy to have only the active vertex or edge or face be the main component that is moving and the rest of the selection merely the affected part rather than moving with it. This would require additional Proportional ring icon I'm afraid. Point being that speed is of utmost importance, I feel that constantly freezing and unfreezing the rest would slow you down considerably.

This might be more generically accomplished by having a "freeze" or "lock" attribute added to vertices in a mesh. The behavior would be similar to hiding verts in that they're not affected by any transform operator (proportional or direct)... however, those verts would still be visible as reference (perhaps dimmed to show their locked state).

@Jason van Gumster:
My thoughts too. In general I think Blender would benefit from global masking system. (Right now I feel like there are multiple individual ones like in sculpting mode and in paint mode. Unification would probably be good for a lot of stuff.)

Three years later and I still think this would be fantastic functionality.

I like the idea and have also felt the need for this function but I agree with Fweeb that would be much better to have a more generic system wide function for stuff like that.

And a related thing, an isolate selection toggle instead of hide and reveal buttons like the ones on the W menu would be much usefull for this funcion too.
