BS Modify Pivot Add-on, it should be integrated in Blender !!!
Since Blender does not provide a tool to directly modify the origin this addon is a good option to be included.
The 3d cursor is useful in some cases for example as a temporary helper to pivot but has its limitations: 1 adds an extra step: (example if you want to place the origin on an edge, you must select the edge, place the cursor on the edge and finally place the origin on the cursor, on other softwares just drag and snap on the edge) 2 does not allow to modify the rotation of the origin.
This addon also makes the entry for those who come from other software a bit more comfortable.

This functionality is BL 2.80 you can now also rotate the 3d cursor, so that kind of makes this addon absolute
* @romboutv * so how u orient 3d cursor properly on planar surfaces? imge.to/i/Lux7i i only gets one perpendicular axis correctly. but pivot addon places all axis as they should be. if cursor will behave this way - addon will become useless but at moment its real solution for such issues
* @impacman * Yeah that is useful indeed. The placement options you get with this addon are quite useful actually
* @impacman * They added something like this now in 2.81 did you see?
* @romboutv * hi. Eahh, I've tested a bit yesterday - nice feature!) One by one blender becomes my only love in 3d...)
The question, of course, is why are you moving the origin of your object so frequently? If you're using it as a reference for scale/rotation, why not just use the 3D cursor directly for that? No need to move the origin at all.
* @Jason van Gumster * I use the origin as permanent pivot and for temporary pivot is clearly more useful 3d-cursor or active object, a week ago I had to move and rotate the origin of more than 100 objects of an architectural project, the origin of all objects were in the center of the scene. I had to move and rotate the local axis so that the animation is easier. And if someone needs to move or rotate the origin it is totally intuitive to do it directly.
* @sebastianmroy * PS in bl 2.80 you simply select them all and use "set origin", then you can center all objects in 1 go. Not sure what the hustle is actually
* @romboutv * what if you dont want the origin in the center of all the objects?... exactely :) you want to quickly be able to place them in certain positions.
Get this one, it places the origin exactly at the selection normal. That's even more precise and you only have to use alt + F5 in Edit mode! Works for vertices, edges, and poly normals. -> iOps_1.5.1.zip
