Suggestions to Enhance Geometry Nodes: String Decoding and Bitwise Flag Tools
I've been building procedural design systems using Geometry Nodes (Blender 4.2), and it's been an incredible experience — intuitive and powerful. However, two key limitations still require overly complex workarounds:
- String Decoding Support:
Currently, we can store and pass strings (e.g. custom names, module IDs), but we can't decode or analyze them inside node trees (e.g. extract substrings, convert text to numeric codes). Even simple operations like parsing "M_01" into a number require bulky string-compare chains. Native tools to decode or index strings would vastly simplify workflows.
- Bitwise Flag Encoding/Decoding:
There’s no support for compact binary flags. For example, storing booleans like "Edge Left / Right / Front / Back" as one integer is efficient, but currently we must manually assemble or decode bits using a tangle of math nodes. Built-in nodes like Bitwise OR, AND, Shift, or even a Bit Mask Encode/Decode would make these patterns far more usable.
These improvements would make GN a lot more capable for system design, data-driven modeling, and logical branching — especially when working on large-scale modular or parametric assets.
Thanks for the amazing work — GN is already changing how many of us build!

As was mentioned, I added this to Blender and it was merged to main a few days ago. It should be in Blender 4.5: projects.blender.org/blender/blender/pulls/138290
I agree that that string manipulation tools are definitely inadequate at the moment. A
String to ValueorString to Integernode would be a great building block node that should be very easy to add. Most of these are already in the works. Bit Math node was actually just committed to Main about an hour ago.
