Move parent independant of children - transform mode
Just like the "Origin" transform mode proposed here:
I'd like to propose another transform mode:
- Parent Transform
or
- Child Transform Compensation Mode
Case
When you have a group of objects nested inside a parent, or even objects as children of bones - sometimes you want to only move the parent without moving the children.
Sometimes you need to reposition a bone but not it's children. Sometimes you need to move the house's door but not it's hinges. Sometimes you need to nudge the item but not it's accessories. Sometimes you need to move a machine part but not it's entire hierachy.
Current Blender workflow:
- Select children
- Unparent children
- Select Parent
- Move parent
- Select children then parent
- Reparent children
OR
- Select children of bone
- Unparent children of bone
- Select bone
- Move bone
- Select children then parent
- Parent childrento bone
Task
Create a transform mode that momentarily "disconnects" the parent/children relationship - freeing up the parent transform without affecting children.
Examples
Softimage has this.
New Workflow
- Activate the Child transform Compensation Mode in Object or Edit mode
- Select Parent
- Move parent
- Disactivate the mode

Great Softimage XSI !!! i asked same things some month ago! 20 years on softimage here... Autodesk have to die. Anyway, i vote this! thanks.
Wish Blender had such thing, because as first person animator I bumping with situations when I need to switch children's parents and then switch it back. It's a unforgivably long and exhausting workflow
Can someone explain how and where this is implemented? An x Softimage user needs to know!
This one got implemented.
this is a great ! it will simplfy the workfllow for scene management , without parenting , clear parenting around for changing group center.
