Folder for .blend1... Files.
It would be great if you could specify an extra folder to save alll the backup files to. They are really valuable for restoring lost work, but they really clutter up the file system and are annoying to clear up. As a result I see many users (especially beginners who might not know what they are) asking how to turn them off completely.
I think the default behaviour could be to create a "backups" folder in the location the .blend is saved in and throw the .blend1... files in there. If the user specifies a directory to save them to in the User Preferences, they get saved there (without any further folder structure).

I agree with this and I find really sad it has so little upvotes. This won't hurt anyone who doesn't care and it will please most people who care about being organized.
The files really should not have a .blend1 extension either. Extensions denote different types of files, and these are simply .blend files. The differentiation should be in the file name itself, e.g. House_backup1.blend
Working with backup systems, Microsoft's OneDrive, Googles Drive, and ordinary systems like SVN, Git etc, it is an absolutely must to keep the handy blendX files as a seperate local backup, as of now they absolutely clutter and one can only use one or the other.
Just saw this and I would love this feature also. I thought the temp folder location would have done it but it does not. For me, this is a problem because I use backup solutions that monitor folders and every time the blend1 file is updated it triggers a backup operation to the cloud which is not ideal. If I could provide another folder for the backup files then I could avoid this without risking losing work and without causing a cloud backup every time blender touches the blend1 file.

This would be great. Also .blender files use to show the actual image of the project in the as the icon but it hasn't worked in windows for the past many version. It would be very practical if this worked again for us visual learners out there, not to mention it looks so presentable like the rest of 2.8.
Blender needs a proper project manager with a default set of folders, and the ability to add custom ones. All 3D apps have something like this, while in Blender you can just set a handful.
@rob: That does seem to be the way of the future. At least for now I wish the thumbnails were visible again since the code should already be there, it should just need a little tweak. At least only one line of code in Run does it for me.
Also ability to create blend1 directory in folders where files were edited and place all blend1 files there, to allow editing multiple with similar named files in different locations. Would be avesome.
