Color Coded Vertex Group

VG Idea.png Feature Suggestion: Color Code Vertex Groups

Managing vertex groups on complex rigs is difficult because they are displayed only as plain text. It would be very helpful to have a feature similar to Collections, where users can manually color code vertex groups for better organization and readability.

For example:

  • Green = Left side (.L)
  • Blue = Right side (.R)

Additionally, when selecting a vertex group like c_index2.l , Blender could lightly highlight its mirrored counterpart c_index2.r .

This would greatly improve rigging and weight painting workflow on complex characters.

Good thinking.

I would also add, that Vertex Groups which are currently 'Assigned' to a Deform Bone, should also have a specific text appearance (maybe Bold?), or maybe having a Bone icon next to them? That approach [instead of additional Color] because it wouldn't work I guess, if the Colors are already taken by Left/Right organization of the text in the Vertex Groups.

Note: It can be very confusing for Riggers, if we have a list of Vertex Groups, but we haven't got any signaling of which Vertex Groups are already taken [Assigned to their respective Deform Bone] and which aren't! That is why, the signaling could be extended for additional related features.
