bringing back the old denoiser
It's probably hopeless but I gotta try. The new denoting choices are too smooth. The flaws of the original denoiser gave the image a texture that was like low light photography on film. I fog the set a lot so I'm always stuck denoising and the old denoiser gave more pleasing results in most situations. The same way cinematographers hunt for old lenses because new lenses have no texture or life to them, it would be nice to have the chunkier option available for aesthetics.

It should be understood that this code for the old denoise will need all sorts of support from bugs and other things that impose certain resources. You can denoise a texture in the compositor and mix the texture without and with denoise, thereby changing the mixing factor. Also, for all sorts of photo processing for photogrammetry you most likely need to use third-party image editors.
Yeah, that's why it's very unlikely to happen.
I really don't think that a crappy denoiser should be the way to achieve what you are looking for. What you need is a filter.
I'm curious about what kind of filter you're talking about.
Film grain. Typically i add stuff like that in photoshop camera raw filter.
The pursuit of imperfections and the fight against the sterility of computer rendered images is a lot of what we do. What the old denoiser gave us was a controllable level of splotchiness in the render. Noise is really fine and splotchiness is a bigger pattern that helps dirty a render up. It's more of an artistic option than old technology. I was just showing a non computer person two side by side renders of the old and new denoting and they were drawn to the splotchier render because it was more organic.
I know this isn't the kind of thing that gets a lot of upvotes so all I can do it ask. I'm stuck doing the animation in 2.79 because of abandoned tools and now I'm going to be stuck rendering in 2.93, right when cycles is getting really exciting. I'm not a programer so I don't know how hard any of this is under the hood to maintain. But this is where we ask these things.
