When snapping to faces, it should be possible to specify an offset from the face

At the moment if you have snap to face enabled, all points are snapped exactly to the face. This can cause problems when you're creating a new mesh which needs to be just slightly above another mesh, such as laying a carpet on a floor or a poster on a wall. This would also be useful in retopology.

I would propose adding an offset parameter to the face snap mode so that the snapping point is offset by this amount along the viewing direction of the viewport camera.

Losing my mind over this right now. I'm trying to add body markings to a low-poly character model (textures are unsuitable for the application) and the shrinkwrap modifier is unsuitable because the offset has to be tight, and the modifier is not placing vertices in the correct place near corners, so the shrinkwrapped faces are clipping into the face underneath. I have no way to fix this without applying the modifier and I end up spending ages just fighting with this. Not an enjoyable experience.

Also would be useful when creating clothes for characters which need to be slightly above the mesh being clothed.

I am sure there will be a multitude of people pointing out (and I guess I will ironically be another), that there is the ShrinkWrap modifier with an offset parameter. That modifier is very useful, but having to worry about setting the modifier's wrap method, mode and target object when there are multiple seperate objects (i.e. shoes over socks over body...etc).

It would be nice to just activate face snapping, set the offset, and when selected vertices are moved over objects, the intersecting face normals would be used as the offset vector.
