Fan (screw variant) modifier

Note (2018/05/09): this will not be in 2.8, because "constructive modifiers" need a global better approach for performance reasons. So, for now, they are antifeatures. I've been informed of that 2 days ago.

Hi,

Here is a proposal for a different screw modifier that I've called "fan".

You can find a demo video here . And some more examples of usage in these older videos, here and here .

Functionalities:

  • This is an array like modifier but the duplis are rotated around an axis
  • Three modes: simple (the object is simply rotated or screwed), homothetic (the object is stretched so that borders can merge), rounded (the object is stretched and rounded)
  • When screwed up, the object can be sheared so that the borders stay connected
  • Option to merge duplis (same as for array modifier)
  • Possibility to use another object as pivot

Your feedback will be appreciated

this will not be in 2.8

Oh, too bad. Any chance to have this anyway?

Great work! I hope it will make it into master. It's sooo obviously needed.

This would have helped a great deal the several times I tried making a good railing for a lighthouse!

do you think you could submit a patch to the BF? so you can implement it in 2.8, it would be nice, maybe it should be added to the modes of the screw modifier.

@Luciano Muñoz: Yes I hope so (and ok for the idea of an option in the actual screw). But I need to learn how to merge that in the 2.8 branch (I even don't know how to obtain it!!).

@christian.hubert: You can just commit it to the master. btw You will propably have to port it to support new dependency graph for 2.8 (anyway, all modiffiers have to be ported over).

Anyway, great modifier. It\nstead of 'fan' name it could have someting with circle (like Circular Array or something like that to be move obvious to newbies.

@Pawel Piotrowski: , thanks for this feedback. And OK for "circular array" that's effectively more simple and so really better!

Lauloque

So simple compared to what it needs to do the same for now. :3
