Include Autosmooth in Modifier that need it

Some Modifier that deal with normals require "Autosmooth" to be turned on, instead of changing tab and turning it on there, why not just add option to turn on autosmooth there?

Maybe it would be better to add a "fix" button instead of replicating the checkbox. When things are in a good state, nothing shows, when it needs fixing, one button and you're done and the message goes away.

* @Ted Schundler * Yes - I also think that's a better solution. It's never a good idea to quietly force-(de)activate anything on a mesh that may have had manual setup by the user.

* @motionblur.of.doom * its not quitely force (de) activate anything here, i think its more like a

"instead of going to the other tab and check that, i will have the option here"

* @Ted Schundler * What's the definition of "good state"... and why wouldn't we want Blender just to default to that?

Alex-D

* @Jason van Gumster * Good state is a state where the requirements for the modifier to work properly are met and we don't want it because the user might not be aware that it is a requirement and doesn't want Blender to quietly change something they might need or have specifically set up.

* @motionblur.of.doom * The point of my question is to know what rules/metrics Blender would use to procedurally determine whether the mesh is in a good state.

* @Ted Schundler * Adding a "Fix now," button would be nice in a lot of little areas for "X is not enabled and required to work," type scenarios.

Alex-D

* @Jason van Gumster * Ah I see what you mean - fair enough. Maybe there's more to it than I can see but if there's a requirement in a modifier that already spits out a warning ("needs autosmooth activated") then this should be the metric, shouldn't it? Or is there something I am missing?

jason

* @motionblur.of.doom * That's true. I guess I got a little hung up on the good/bad nomenclature.

I'm still not sure I really like any of the three available solutions (current warning, repeated Autosmooth checkbox, Fix Me button). They all feel a bit like band-aids over a more core issue.

That said, the proposed solution would be pretty easy to implement with an add-on as a proof of concept.

This would be indeed great... :)

I never understood why Auto Smooth is even an option. It should be activated with 180 grades all the time we use smooth shading because you can't see manually hardened edges with this option turned off. Why would you ever need it to turn off? Doesn't make any sense to me. If I ever need edges hardened by angle, there is an option for that, like select by angle + sharpen edges.

pablovazquez

Performance. Having to calculate the angle to define the sharpness of a corner all the time on every transform is expensive, thus why it's not enabled by default in new meshes.

jazzik.jazz

Very good idea.
