Filmic should just be for render layers - not everything in the compositor.
If you use Filmic, it effects EVERYTHING in the compositer - not just the render layers. This means if you want to work ontop of some live action footage the filmic effects that, greying any whites. It also means it’s really hard to have a pure white background - on filmic you have to set it to like 100,100,100 where 1,1,1 SHOULD be white. This means any anti-aliasing around the edge of the white background is lost. - any small black text for instance.
Can we have an option for filmic and everything else in the colour management tab to only effect the render layer - not everything else in the compositor?

This is something I find extremely overlooked. Filmic affects color management across Blender as a whole, from 3D view-port, to images in the editor, to VSE sequences, and just about everything else. This is why so many videos you see edited since Blender 2.8 have the whites looking really grey.
Yes please! This issue is really annoying right now and the workarounds are quite clunky and time consuming. It makes it really hard to composite something on top of a backplate.
Since this post was created we can now output in the compositor with the option 'save as render' which allows you to view your final image in SRGB even if you were working in Filmic. Perfect if you are forced to work in standard view transform with collaborators.
Someone help me understand this in Blender. Shouldn't rgb data be flowing in purely linear and floating point, except transformed at UI inputs, texture image inputs and optionally at final image output? Are some of the compositor nodes processing in sRGB, or 8 bit integer?
With GPUs nowadays, they would be faster with linear 32 bit fp, even when using 11-16bit fp for intermediate texture memory speed.
Actually, filmic does not affect vse, only compositing. But this is fustrzting if you are trying to composite video.
* @mikefutcher1 * Filmic does quite dramatically affect the VSE. Try importing footage into the VSE and switching the color management view transform and you will see what I mean.
* @Zach Hixson * I encountered the same issue. I THINK there might be a possible solution if you run your scene into the VSE from a different scene. That would allow you to have different color management, but unfortunately requires you to be in another scene. You can import your composite from the other scene however by adding a scene strip.
