Left click select?

This is a general proposal for why Blender should use Left click select. I know this has been covered before but hear me out (been using blender for 4 years and this still drives me crazy).

  1. If all other software uses left click to select, then why does blender use right click by default. If you change it, all the experienced blender users know how to revert the settings to what they were anyway, something new blender users aren’t very familiar with.

  2. Placing the cursor with left click is THE BIGGEST WASTE of the MOST PRESSED PHYSICAL BUTTON OF ALL TIME!!!!!!! If left click was for selection, than that would free up right click for STANDARD stuff like content aware MENUS. I rarely ever use the cursor but when I do I move it with cursor to selection or other features that are MILLIONS of times more PRECISE. Give the boot to the cursor and kick it down to alt click status, (I don’t care if that “emulates the middle mouse button” because if blender used modern trackpads properly [which it does occasionally] we wouldn’t need it)!

  3. It would allow for box selection for noobs, one less shortcut that is that wouldn’t even exist if blender wasn’t ancient as hell. Perhaps blender needs to evolve along with its developers.

  4. The whole right-click left-click debate is as old as blender when it is clear to me that the mouse is dying as more and more users switch to laptops with ever more advanced multi touch trackpads. Even the trackpad is becoming obsolete because most laptops are now 2 in one tablet-laptop monstrosities.

  5. It would make the blender UI debates much more productive. In general, for all of blender’s basic features, it would be prudent to have the shortcuts match the OS it’s running on (EX: copy command- command+c on mac, control+c on windows). Putting blind faith in the decisions of the operating system’s UI team (except that of windows because they created vista, Clippy, and Windows me) would make it so that users don’t have to basically learn how to use the 1980s operating system blender was made on, which would ease the learning curve a bit. Currently, with the sum of all blender’s ridiculously easy to change quirks, many users would just rage quit before learning even how to render.

As a pen tablet user I'm all for RIGHT CLICK SELECT. I used 3ds Max, and before that 3D Studio R4, and before those Imagine, Scult4D and Real3D on Amiga. Over 20 years I used left click select, and yet I like Blender's way of selection better, I got used to in very quick. I started using a Wacom pen tablet like 5 years ago, I use it for polygonal modelling, not only for sculpting. When I was using 3ds Max I used SPACE key very often, SPACE key locks the selection, locking selection prevents deselecting the current selection, or selecting something else. It was a habit for me to hit SPACE right after selecting something, since I use a pen tablet and accidental left clicks are more often on tablets I often accidentally deselected on 3ds Max. That never happens on Blender. I select with top stylus button, and pen touch is the action. I like Blender's UI, and interaction model. Many thanks to people who designed it.

Us MAC users are forced to CONTROL CLICK! Even the peasants with their toshiba laptops can right click away! Wouldn't it be reasonable to have left click select as default as all laptops use it to select by default? Advanced users (people that are over the age of thirty and like things the way they were back in their day) can change this in settings in a snap while new users (young people who are the future of blender) aren't as fortunate as far as creating custom keymaps goes. If you want blender to stay the way it is than just don't update. You don't have to deprive the REST of us from quality open source software.

Whatever, I like right select in blender much more, it's will used my mouse much more balance, reduce the work on the left, make the mouse live longer, maybe you can view this video, it will tell you why is right, why the right is right (proper) :D vimeo.com/88205588

There is no reason for it. It's as if Ton picked the key assignments out of a HAT and everyone just is so conservative in their views that they don't even want to touch blender's UI in any major way. People are thumping their key assignment shortcut cheatsheets like bibles and saying hail Marys to an enormous effigy of Mr. Roosendaal. Have you forgotten the first time you opened blender. How you didn't know how to even SELECT anything.

Amen brother! Yeah, as I have said before: The BULK of users who want left click select are NOOBS who have to learn blenders STUPID and RANDOM key assignments. Experienced users who support it are just being nice to new users and experienced users who don't agree with it are just too LAZY to even go into settings and change it. You should watch Andrew Price's BRILLIANT proposal for a task oriented UI on the Blender Guru youtube page youtube.com/watch . He's too nice, though. Being abrasive like the crazy vegans who chain themselves to cows screaming "meat is murder" is more what I'm going for. I want change and I won't stop whining until I get some recognition for my handiwork. I did make some really valid points that the 7 people who voted my suggestion down seemed to overlook.

Why this proposal is still open ? As this problem is already seems to be solved.
