Make the sidebar see-through when using Region Overlap, like the 3D Viewport.

Done! This is now in the main branch (Blender 4.4 alpha).

Hi. Thanks for the suggestion! I've edited the title and description to be a bit more descriptive.

Made a patch for it: projects.blender.org/blender/blender/pulls/129466

@pablovazquez that was fast! 🚀 Could we have this in every editor please? 🥺

I tried and trust me you don't want it on every editor haha

Sometimes it gets on the way. It needs to be specifically picked per editor. For example in the VSE you don't want the tools to be on top of channels. Or the spreadsheet sidebar on top of the list. Or the Asset Browser.

region overlap

Indeed, "as is" it doesn't work everywhere, I may have spoken too fast.

But I think it could still work in more editors if more of the UI could be hovering semitransparently above the rest?

I.E. for the VSE, I was picturing this in my head:

vse demo

Admittedly it isn't as simple as the current region overlap, I had to keep the background 80-ish % opaque. And perhaps it not being the same region makes it harder to implement. But what do you think?

I love how this graph mockup looks 🤩

Also, I do insist on this matter because a very nice side effect of bringing region overlapp to animation-based editors would be, it would "fix" the issue when using "Sync Visible Range" accross multiple editors requires to perfectly align the sidebars + toolbars + channelbars across each synced editor to make it work:

sync play range issue

It doesn't feel nice, having to do all that to enjoy a synced range. In addition to be a bit tedious to set up, it "forces" the user to display or hide UI elements in a way they didn't want.

It's a bit of a stretch from the original proposal, but I hope this could be given a though as I step hard on that nail each time I want to see my audio waveform to animate dialogues.
