Extensions (Blender 4.2) - add support for .toml files in Text Editor

Blender 4.2 requires add-on authors to pack add-ons (now called extensions) in slightly different manner.

Edit: changed the request, as some things I listed are actually already possible / Thanks -L0Lock-!

A blender_manifest.toml file is now required, that pretty much does what add-on metadata in your script used to do. For some reason, it is not possible to see .toml files in Text Editor file open /save panel by default, one must disable the filtering completely to see .toml files. It would be nice if there was an option in filter menu to show .toml files. What I'm trying to say, I'd like to see .toml files by default.

Wish:

  • Make the Text Editor open / save dialog show toml files by default (maybe make this optional if some don't like this?)
  • Also add support for syntax highlighting for .toml files. When text file has extension other than .py, syntax highlighting doesn't work

On my phone right now so I can't check the latest beta. But :

Adding * in filename field of the open text file dialog doesn't show unrecognized file types, like many other pieces of software do.

That isn't how Blender's file browser works.

There is no filter in open dialog

Filters should be in the top right corner, see the funnel icon and its popover.

See Blender Manual - File Browser - Filters

"That isn't how Blender's file browser works." - I know, but I made a point that usually this works in any decent text editor, if the file extension isn't directly supported by the editor. I see no point in hiding unknown file types, well maybe someone opens a binary file, but I can do that in other text editors too...

By "there is no filter" I meant that the top right corner filter menu doesn't do a thing - I tried activating ALL the filter items, but even then, it won't show the .toml files.

I would disable all the filters actually. I reckon it is set to show only text and py files by default.

That actually works. Thanks! I don't know why I didn't try that :D

I think then this request is mostly useless... as the syntax highlighting is less important. I guess I'll delete / change this request!

You could change it to have the filter include toml files along txt and py by default so that we don't need to disable the filters altogether. Plus syntax highlighting is still all about better toml support.
