Multi-Channel Painting in Blender's Texture Paint Mode

Introduction:

The current Texture Paint mode in Blender allows users to paint on individual texture channels (color, roughness, metallic, etc.). This proposal introduces a new feature: Multi-Channel Painting . This allows artists to paint on multiple channels simultaneously, with synchronized brush strokes.

Benefits:

  • Increased Efficiency: Painting on multiple channels simultaneously streamlines the texturing workflow, reducing the time needed to create complex textures.
  • Improved Consistency: Synchronized brush strokes ensure textures maintain a consistent relationship between channels, leading to more realistic materials.
  • Enhanced Creativity: Multi-channel painting allows for exploration of how different channels interact, fostering creative texture development.

Implementation:

  • New Painting Mode: Introduce a dedicated "Multi-Channel" painting mode in Texture Paint.
  • Channel Selection: Allow users to choose which channels to paint on simultaneously (e.g., Color, Roughness, Metallic).
  • Brush Synchronization: Brush strokes applied in this mode affect all selected channels proportionally. For example, increasing brush strength would darken the color channel and decrease roughness/metallic values simultaneously.
  • Channel Weighting: Provide an option to adjust the weight of each channel within the brush stroke. This allows for fine-tuning the impact on each channel.
  • Visual Feedback: Highlight the selected channels in the brush preview and viewport for clarity.

Technical Considerations:

  • Performance: Optimize the multi-channel painting system to maintain smooth performance while painting on multiple textures.
  • Node Integration: Ensure compatibility with existing node workflows for post-processing multi-channel textures.
  • User Interface: Design an intuitive interface for selecting channels and adjusting brush weights.

Future Expansion:

  • Channel Mapping: Allow users to define custom mappings between brush properties and specific channels for advanced control.
  • Layer Support: Extend multi-channel painting to work with the upcoming layered textures feature for even more complex material creation.

Conclusion:

Multi-Channel Painting is a valuable addition to Blender's Texture Paint mode, offering significant improvements for both efficiency and artistic control. This proposal provides a strong foundation for this feature, with potential for further expansion in the future.

To be honest here. Just having the ability to draw on multiple layers in parallel would be wonderful in itself.

Or have it render out a selection of layers and let one selectively draw on one or more layers. (preferably have render and drawing be independent selections from each other.)

How a brush stroke should effect the multiple selected "drawing" layers is probably up for debate. If one wants to increase something on one channel and decrease on another, etc. But ideally speaking, we could make this configurable, as in selecting 1 brush per layer with its own settings. Making it fully customizable to whatever the end user desires to do.
