visual scripting system

Learning programming takes a very large amount of time. Some people want to program some addons to help them in their work. The visual scripting will help them very much, so I want to add a visual scripting system to Blender. This will increase the productivity of the addons . I hope to add a visual scripting system soon

Node-based systems only work well for data-flow programming. Many programmers find visual scripting more difficult than actual scripting. What Blender needs are a better a macro-recording system, and customizable pie menus (like Pie Menu Editor addon).

It would be great to be able to simply create buttons than automate tasks in Blender. I do this for large projects that require repetitive tasks for exporting assets for example :

  • Duplicate active object
  • Apply geometry nodes
  • Add a new texture to the material to bake into
  • bake diffuse and save externaly
  • bake normal and save externally
  • Export
  • Delete the texture from the node tree otherwise it gets messy
  • Finally delete the duplicate that was just created for export.

For many assets this is tedious if you don't want to "freeze" the procudural possibilities. However making a script when not familiar with it takes a lot of trial and error, finding the appropriate code, often times simply copying the output of the Info editor won't workmostly because of the fact that via a python addon, selecting an object is not the same as making it active. In my shallow experience with scripts this is what complicates things the most because you have to go through some for loops that shouldn't be all that necessary. I believe a scripting node editor would be very useful, with ready made nodes that speak to the every user, for my above exemple it could look like this:

  • Input Geometry/objects/collection/selection etc
  • Apply modifiers with a string argument, or a list of available elements
  • Add Texture node, with a string argument as name for later use (delete for exemple) or attributes such as resolution, texture coordinates etc.
  • Bake node with all the necessary functions
  • Export
  • Delete based on the previously set attributes or variables.

Saying it like this makes it sound a lot like geometry nodes with the difference that it wouldn't be real time, you'd need an execute button.

I'd be willing to make a proper RCS proposal with mockups if people are interested

"Takes a very large amount of time."

Simplest addons you can make "copy paste" like without any understanding of python. At least half of this "From zero to hero" course will be enough to work on mid complexity addon... Not so big deal. Much more time u will spend on understanding how things work in Blender API.
