Real-time vertex color lighting

As the title says, it would be nice to have real-time lighting for vertex colors, especially for recreating retro aesthetics.

I've baked vertex colors onto scenes and models by first using real-time regular lighting and then baking it, but it'd be nice to have the option for using it in real-time since it saves a lot of guess-work and technical fiddling.

Godot 4.4 recently introduced this feature, but not all of us are looking to get into the game dev side of things or use a second piece of software. Below is a video from the 4.4 page.

for now you can work around this using geometry nodes using a collection and the For Each loop to set values in attributes per vert. Then make a shader using that attribute multiplying the colour on an emission node not sure how you'd handle shadows though
