Lauloque

In Blender Render, you had to create a custom material in order to mimic a custom matcap on each wanted object.

On cycles and eevee, you also need to create your material .

Now it could be nice to have something to make this easier. Like a matcap texture coordinate.

can it work with viewer node from node wrangler

viewer node is just an emission shader node with a custom label, so yes

i just found out that somebody had the same request so please blender devs please implement this feature for assigning matcaps to different objects each object having a different matcap

I don't know how many similar request about this there is. This is mine : blender.community/c/rightclickselect/pZmQ/

About LoLock anwser, it need to run in material viewport and it isn't as optimised as workbench engine (no multi sampling, no screen space AO or others filters, no hdri light, what is need is just a raster of polygon with matcap or not, like what workbench does)

i love your idea but you know you can use workbench if its upgraded enough and given some love by the devs

You might have not fully understend or I might use bad names, this is what I call workbench, EEVEE, and Cycles.
