Select Pattern or Next
I know this one exists in another software built on python and I hear you guys hate to have suggestions like this but it is a very very handy feature.
In one software that I used to use before coming here there is a select next or something similar.y named
It keeps the patter you are selecting and if you tap the hotkey for it, it will continue selecting how you selected.
You for instance select two polygons then skip one then select two again then hit the hotkey it does it til it runs out of poly's to select.
You may say well you got checker deselect for it but that does have an unpredictable factor in it sometimes when this barely does.
(If you wish to know the software it is Modo.)

Heavypoly had a python script that does this. I don't know if he ever updated it for 2.80+ though.
For simple patterns you can use "Select Next" in Select Menu>Select More/Less. Select two edge or face in a pattern then use select next. Modo is the master of pattern selection.
* @yasharjk * What about say this. On one face loop I want to select every other two but on another face loop I want to select every other one? All at the same time. Doing it on two different passes could create different results than the original desired result.
Modo has some good features that Blender needs admittedly but changing from Modo has not be a bad choice. Just mildly annoying in some areas.
* @crop.circles.studio * Yes that's right, i pointed that for simple patterns you can use it...
* @yasharjk * Just making sure my point was getting across is all.
