Build addons without having Blender (with blender_ext.py)
When developing an addon, Blender is obviously needed, but I would like to set up a build pipeline.
It would be nice to be able to build without having to download the entire Blender software.
My ideas are either:
-
Providing
blender_ext.pyin a separate, pip installable python package. -
Making
blender_ext.pyaccessible through Python whenbpyis installed as a Python package.
The latter would not be ideal, as the
bpy
package is still several hundred Mo.
It should be fairly easy, as
blender_ext.py
does not require any external library, including
bpy
.
The script:
projects.blender.org/blender/blender/src/branch/main/scripts/addons_core/bl_pkg/cli/blender_ext.py
The build command:
docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/advanced/command_line/extension_arguments.html

As you as dev should test the addon whilst developing and more importantly before release you're already required to have blender on your system. So tbh in don't see the need. And if you need to supply daily test builds via ci/cd pipeline, simply zip your repo up, keeping blender_manifest and init top level; no need for blender at all imo.
