Now that Empties support Geometry Nodes: how to author materials for the object in Shader Editor?
I recently started using the new and amazing feature that lets us attach Geometry Nodes to Empties. However, I reached an issue almost immediately:
After using "Set Material" amidst the Empty's GN modifier flow, there is no way to easily edit the material in the Shader Editor unless there is another (mesh) object with the material added to the mesh material slot. One must create and select a different object to edit the material
I suggest 3 scenarios that would work well from a UX perspective:
- (good) Add material slots to an empty object
- (good) Add functionality to Shader Editor to automatically poll the selected object's GN modifiers' nodes for referenced materials
- (best) Add functionality to Shader Editor to allow edits to any material (not just selected object). Previously requested here: blender.community/c/rightclickselect/ywpV/
Thanks for reading! And please let me know if I am missing something that already solves this issue.

This proposal is very similar to this one: blender.community/c/rightclickselect/j56B/
ad 1. If You wanna convert Empty into Mesh type. Why dont You just use Empty Mesh object as before?
Ad 3. Yes. Working around that is annoying.
