"If nothing is selected, everything is selected in Edit Mode"

That would speed up modeling a lot. So after just going into Edit Mode, for example activating any tool would be like: bevel > adjusting > tab to go out if I want to bevel everything. Works great in Modo with all kind of tools...

I'm Modo user and having been using this for as long as I remember. It is very good. Have had no problem with it, never. But now, as trying to learn Blender, miss it a lot.

It would be good to add some clarity to the proposal. There is confusion over when everything is selected in the comments. To clarify, is the proposal that if no vertices are selected in edit mode, then have the default be all the vertices selected? So if you have previously selected vertices in edit mode, it wouldn't affect the selection when re-entering into edit mode.

Hi, I made a video in which I try to demonstrate more how this works : youtu.be/5f-yvZEmNWc

Bujus_Krachus

Nope, please just no. All other modelling tasks will get more complicated like this. If i want to extrude a face i just select that and extrude. With your proposed change, i'd have to deselect everything first, then select and extrude. Go to bject mode to preview in solid and again additional step. I belive the amount of selection based operations is far greater than the amount of all mesh operations. Plus, it's just the hotkey a to press to select everything

  1. I propose this feature as a toggle on/off so you don't need to use it.
  2. If you have anything selected it will extrude only selected parts
  3. This feature is for quick modeling, like push, bevel etc. Which would be like: Tab > Ctrl+B > Tab. 3 clicks instead of 4-5. If you model fast, it counts.

You would not have to deselect anything. If you select something, then that is the selection.

  • Have a scene with thousand of objects and hundred thousand instances.
  • Hit 'S' by accident
  • Instant viewport freeze or crash as Blender tries to scale thousand of meshes with heavy modifiers, Geometry Nodes, Armatures, etc...

Absolutely WORST idea.

There is also one other that hasn't been mentioned yet : If all is selected, when nothing is selected, then it is possible to free hotkey A for something else. It is one of the best keys for binding, so it is not insignificant advantage.

TheRedWaxPolice

Oh yeah, I really miss that from C4D... This is gold...

khellstr

I thought that this is something that only Modo has :) Good that it is used elsewhere too, makes it probably that it could be an option in Blender sometime in futere.

Oh, frack no.

If you want to select everything, press the hotkey to do it.

drevious Author

Yeah, another button click, thanks no. Feature request still as an option to toggle on/off

khellstr

What is hot key for that ? I like it when you don't have to do that. If you for example make a cube, you can start to move and scale it without selecting anythign. It is a small thing, but makes the flow much better.

Press A.

And I understand the feature request, I simply disagree with it. When I enter edit mode, i want whatever I had previously selected in edit mode to continue to be selected, as it is now. Not ALL the points.

And it's very seldom I want all the points (or edges, whatever) selected in the first place. Usually i want a particular selection of points, not all...

drevious Author

That's great, so just select points you want if you like it that way. I prefer to not have additional key click in other case, so it would be cool to have such an possibility as toggle on/off. You don't like it, you just turn it off. But when you model for hours it saves you a lot of time. Check Modo or Softimage

I think the proposal is that if no vertices are selected, then have the default be all the vertices selected. So if you are midway through something it wouldn't affect you, but if you deselected all vertices before leaving edit mode, then when you re-enter edit mode all the vertices will be selected.

I don't see an issue with this. I guess it's a slight usability improvement over current behaviour.

khellstr

"And I understand the feature request, When I enter edit mode, i want whatever I had previously selected in edit mode to continue to be selected, as it is now. Not ALL the points.!"

No, you don't fully understand the concept, as this would not happen like you describe. If you have an existing selection, then this existing selection would be used, exactly the same way it is now used.

Only in instances, where you don't have selection, all would be selected. In Modo, it doesn't draw the selections when nothing/everything is selected. But if you start for example move stuff, everything moves, without needing to select it.

This is very convent, and it becomes kind of second nature after using it for a while. In my opinion, it is very hard, or impossible to make definite opinion about that functionality without testing it in real life.

For the record, I have never seen anyone complaining about that feature in Modo, and I have been an active user for a long time. And seen A LOT of other complaints about Modo.

khellstr

I think it is quite minor thing, and it would probably not enhance workflows much for those who haven't used to it.

But for us, who have been using it for years, it is one of those things you really miss.

For example, in Modo I often create a Cube, and hit few times D, and I have Subdived Cube. ( I do a lot of little "test" scenes for all kind of experimets. It is not a big thing, but the flow just feels much better when you can skip the selecting.

ps. saddly it seems that we can't post images or gives here to comments :(
