Asset Browser supports other file types
The brush assets in 4.3 look great! Even though 4.2 hasn't been released yet, I'm already looking forward to it! In the current 4.3, the Asset Browser supports 7 file types. However, image files are not supported.
When I want to mark a .png or .jpg file as an asset, the only feasible way to do it is to put them into a material or world and mark them as an asset. That works pretty well too. But it would be nice to be able to mark image files as assets as well.
Considering that it's currently possible to do use image files as thumbnails, I guess it shouldn't be too hard?
Image assets can have the following features:
Import images into a file when dragging a non-exr image to a place in the 3d view where there are no objects
When dragging an exr image into a 3d view, ask if you want to create a world that uses this exr file
When dragging a non-exr picture onto an object, there are two options:
- ask whether to create a material that uses this image as the image texture
- as a decal, add a 16×16 square mesh and add a wrap modifier to allow the image to be used as a decal. When holding down the mouse, you can show a preview of the decal, and support moving the mouse to adjust the rotation of the decal at this point.
When dragging a non-exr image onto an empty object, ask whether to import the image as an empty object and replace the empty object.
When dragging a non-exr image to a camera, ask whether to set this image as the background image of the camera.
When dragging a non-exr image into the material editor, import the image as an image node
In addition, if the asset browser supports text files, users can share their py scripts as assets to others. This should be very useful.
I remember when 3.0 was released, there were plans to add support for other file types. But since 3.1 added node groups and 3.2 added collections, it seems like it's been a long time since we've added support for other types of data, so it would be great if we could add support for image and text data along the way in 4.3!
(I'm not good at English, I'm using deepl to translate, so I apologize if the semantics don't make sense. I looked up the feature requests that have been made, and someone made a similar but not specific enough request, but didn't get a response from the developers. Thank you for taking the time to look at my feature request and have a nice day!)
