Precision NURBS Modeling for Uninterrupted Product Design to Animation Workflow

Problem Statement:

Blender is extensively used for product visualization, advertising, and animation, but product designers cannot use it for actual design work due to missing precision modeling tools. This creates a fragmented workflow where designers must:

  • Model precisely in CAD software (Rhino, MOI3D, SolidWorks...)

  • Export/import to Blender for visualization and product animation

  • Maintain multiple files that can get out of sync

The user base exists: Social media discussions show widespread demand from industrial designers, automotive designers, jewelry designers, 3D printing enthusiasts, architects and product visualization studios and freelancers wanting to unify their workflow in Blender.

Core Philosophy:

"Discuss dimensions, deliver precise freeform 3D models. The CNC machine or 3D printer slicer software reads STEP/IGES, not dimension tables."

Requested Features:

  1. Precision Modeling Foundation (Essential for manufacturable designs)

Unit-aware modeling system with real-world units (mm, cm, inches) and conversions

Absolute coordinate entry with unit specification: X:10.5mm, Y:0.0, Z:-3.2mm

Precision grid snapping with real-world units and adjustable increments

    Dimensional constraints (distance=100.0mm ±0.1, angle=45°)

Geometric constraints (parallel, perpendicular, tangent, concentric)

Measurement tools that show actual manufacturing dimensions

  2. Production-Ready NURBS Surface Modeling (Missing in current Blender)

True NURBS kernel integration (not just display NURBS)

Continuity-controlled operations: G0/G1/G2 continuity tools and validation

Constrained lofting/sweeping with guide curves and continuity constraints

Variable-radius fillets with continuity control along edges

Surface-surface blending for smooth transitions (wing-body, handle-body junctions)

Shell tool for creating manufacturable thin-walled parts

Surface analysis: Curvature combs, zebra stripes, draft angle analysis

Watertight solid creation from surfaces (essential for 3D printing/CNC)

  3. Engineering Communication Tools (For design reviews & manufacturing)

Accurate mass properties: Volume, surface area, center of mass (not estimated)

Section views via cutting planes with exportable cross-sections

Dimensioning tools with tolerancing (ISO/ANSI standards)

Robust CAD exchange: Lossless STEP/IGES import/export of BREP/NURBS data

Part tree/assembly structure for complex products (nice-to-have)

Basic BOM generation from assembly structure (nice-to-have)

Hey bud, ID here. While I agree Blender would benefit better NURBS tools, you should check this project. I have strong hopes it might be merge to Blender at some point.
