Proposal: Multi-Pass Bevel Weight System for the Bevel Modifier
Problem
When using the Bevel Modifier in Weight mode, artists often assign different Bevel Weights to neighboring edges. On corners where edges with different weights meet, the bevel algorithm generates distorted, collapsed or “mushed” geometry. This happens because all weighted edges are processed in a single pass, and competing bevel widths interfere with each other. This makes Weight mode unreliable for models requiring multiple distinct bevel sizes on intersecting topology.
Proposed Solution: Multi-Pass Bevel Weight Mode
Introduce a multi-pass Weight workflow that processes weighted edges in separate ordered passes, preventing interference between different bevel widths.
- New “Bevel Group” Attribute for Edges and Vertices
Add a numeric “Bevel Group” field to: N-Panel → Item → Transform → Edge Data. N-Panel → Item → Transform → Vertex Data.
Default value: 0 (edge/vertex is ignored by Bevel modifier in Weight mode).
Values ≥ 1 represent Bevel Groups.
Group number determines the order of processing (pass 1, pass 2, pass 3, etc.). This keeps the existing Bevel Weight system unchanged, but adds the ability to separate conflicting weighted edges into different groups so they are processed independently.
- Dynamic List of Bevel Groups in the Bevel Modifier
When the user selects Weight Mode, the Bevel modifier should expose a dynamic list of Bevel Groups.
Example UI structure on attached picture.
Pressing + creates a new group entry (Group 1, Group 2, Group 3…). The list order matches the numeric Bevel Group values assigned to edges/vertices. Each group represents a separate bevel pass, applied sequentially.
- Unique Parameters Per Group
Every Bevel Group in the modifier should have its own independent settings, specifically:
Profile (Shape), Geometry Settings, Shading Settings
Also, the Segments field should not be global. It should be unique for each Bevel Group. This will allow for more flexible adjustment of bevels using a non-destructive method.
If this significantly increases the load on the system, then perhaps some parameters should be kept common for all Bevel Groups. Perhaps Width Type could also be made unique for each Bevel Group, if that is realistic. Such technical issues should be left to the developers.
Summary:
This proposal introduces:
✔ Separate bevel passes via Bevel Groups
✔ Edge/Vertex Bevel Group fields in the N-panel
✔ Dynamic group list inside the modifier
✔ Independent settings per group (Segments, Profile, Geometry, Shading)
✔ Zero disruption to the existing Bevel Weight workflow
✔ Eliminates the “geometry collapse” issue on corners with mixed bevel sizes
This system would give artists full control, keep Weight mode non-destructive, and dramatically improve consistency of bevel results in complex meshes.

Great Idea!, I just finished re-modeling a piece that was in STL format and modeled it directly in Blender, and this variation in the bevels was very present in the original model. I had to give up and leave some bevels the same size because I couldn't make these variations with the independent groups you propose.
Great idea! I often spend a lot of time adjusting weights for bevels. This feature will make the workflow much easier!
