Modification of the Extrude tool

It's hard to believe that the Extrude tool has gone so many years without any significant improvements or attention.

Extrude is one of the core and most essential tools in polygonal modeling. It plays a key role, and it’s almost criminally unfair to leave it in such a stagnant state for so long.

Let’s break down how the Extrude tool currently works — and what its limitations are.

When you try to apply the tool to an edge loop, you get an Extrude that creates zero-thickness polygons. Worse still, this kind of Extrude breaks the manifold geometry. Such an Extrude is only useful in very rare cases, and in its current form, it’s almost entirely useless.

In another case, when you apply Extrude to a face loop, you only get a basic result, with no control over the width or number of segments. This severely limits your ability to perform precise modeling tasks, especially when fine-tuning the Extrude is crucial.

To sum it up, there are two main features that must be added:

  • The ability to control the width (thickness) during Extrude

  • The ability to set the number of segments

In a way, what’s needed is a hybrid tool that combines the functionality of Extrude, Bevel, and Inset, which will allow saving time and significantly expand the capabilities of the extrusion tool.

I’m actively looking for a team of like-minded people who can support and help me promote this proposal. 2025-08-21_213144ап.jpg
