Add Native 2D Drafting Tools or Vector Drawing Features to Blender

Dear Blender Developers and Community,

I would like to propose the addition of native 2D drafting tools and vector-based drawing features to Blender. While Blender is a phenomenal tool for 3D modeling, rendering, and animation, it currently lacks robust support for technical 2D drawing workflows that are essential in architectural, industrial, and product design processes.

🔹 Why This Feature Is Important: Bridge the Gap Between CAD and Visualization Many users in architecture, interior design, furniture design, and engineering use AutoCAD or similar tools for creating precise 2D technical drawings (plans, sections, elevations). Then, they often switch to Blender for rendering. Native 2D drafting in Blender would eliminate tool-switching and streamline this pipeline.

Enable Accurate Layouts and Documentation Blender lacks tools like dimension lines, construction lines, hatching, annotation layers, and snapping features for technical precision. Adding these would allow users to generate 2D documentation directly from 3D models, similar to AutoCAD’s “Flatshot” or Revit’s drafting views.

Attract a Wider User Base CAD professionals, architects, and industrial designers often overlook Blender due to its lack of technical drafting support. Integrating 2D vector tools (like those in Inkscape or CAD software) would make Blender more appealing and broaden its user base significantly.

Freestyle and Line Art Are Not Enough While the Freestyle and LineArt modifiers are powerful for stylized renderings, they are not vector-accurate or editable in the way technical drawings require. They also lack dimensioning, line styles, and proper layout controls.

CAD Sketcher Proves There Is Demand The popularity of the CAD Sketcher add-on shows there’s a strong demand for parametric 2D sketching in Blender. Making this functionality part of the Blender core or providing official support would be a logical next step.

🔧 Suggested Features: 2D Sketching workspace or mode

Snapping and constraints (horizontal, vertical, equal, tangent, etc.)

Native dimension tools (length, angle, radius)

Editable vector strokes (SVG-like, with layers and styles)

Export to DXF or SVG from 2D views

Layout tools for plan, section, and detail views

📈 Benefits: Streamlines the AEC and manufacturing visualization pipeline

Reduces dependence on external CAD software

Improves precision workflows in Blender

Opens Blender to a massive professional market segment

Thank you for your amazing work and continued innovation. I hope this idea gains community support and finds a place in Blender’s development roadmap.

Sincerely, A Blender User

Something like Sketcher or 3D Curves, but enhanced, I think would be sufficient. 3D objects that can only be edited in 2D, whether they're curves, meshes, or GreasePencils. I don't know if a new editor is worth it. In any case, I think it's worth thinking about, as the option should be incorporated somehow.
