Linear display mode for Constant interpolation in the curve editor

The animation curves for the Constant interpolation mode can be hard to read, especially when one is doing complex character animations. (where Constant mode is a must)

It would be really useful if they could be displayed as if the curve is set to linear interpolation because that offers much better readability. Compare the three examples in the mockup. Without the need to switch them to that mode and loose the stepped interpolation during playback. The aim is to be able to see the animation in stepped mode, but see its curves as lines instead of steps.

I do realize that it would be important to show that the interpolation of a curve is in fact stepped, even though it is shown as lines. Not sure what would be the best way to do that. Maybe some dots or dashes overlayed, similarily as for locked curves, but in a way that's visually distinct from that. (See the middle curve in the mockup) I suspect it would be best to treat it as a view mode, not on a per channel basis. There could be a button at the top of the editor, next to the Normalize button. (With text, so it is large and immedietely visible wether the mode is on). The background of the Curve Editor could be tinted as well to indicate that it is not the "true" shape of the curves. (see mockup) curves.png Not sure if it would be better if all interpolation modes would show up as linear, or only stepped ones, but I suspect, the former would be clearer.

I would actually make the stepped curve display prominent and have the linear preview subtle to really emphasize which one is "real" and which one is just a preview.

Having two kinds of displays at the same time would increase clutter, and decrease readability I think. Maybe a faded stepped, prominent linear could work though (like with the ghost overlay on the mockup)

I would prefer to have both displays at the same time to make sure it displays the accurate thing at all times rather than having one display that is essentially a lie.
That sounds like recipe for confusion otherwise.

I agree, this would need to be clear. That's why I'd proposed the tinting of the whole window background as well. I guess if would be good if the transparency of the linear and constant curves transparency could be set in the theme too.
