Item numbering defaults in Outliner

What if, by default, the first Light was named Light.001, and first Cube was Cube.001 ?

Then the numbering system could just continue on from there: Cube.002, Cube.003, etc....

Currently, I keep finding myself having to re-number "Cube.001" to "Cube.002" and then go back and re-name Cube to Cube.001. Same for lights and other items in the Outliner.

An added bonus might be to use an underscore instead of a period, resulting in: Cube_001 Cube_002 etc...

I would prefer if instead, it would default to Light and rename the first light to Light.001 if another object with a conflicting name is created, and name the new object to Light.002.

This should be an optional preference, and there should be a way to avoid it if you don't want the original renamed. For example, when duplicating, maybe Ctrl Shift D will duplicate without renaming the original and use the current method of naming the new object to .001. You could also put this option in the redo panel for the add and duplicate operators, but I would prefer hotkeys.

I just find the ".001" to be annoying aesthetically, and only want to see it if I actually need it.

And yes, I wish we could customize the naming convention for duplicates. I don't even want a separating character, and I don't want 3 digits because I have basically never had 100+ duplicates before. My preferred duplicate naming convention would be Cube01, Cube02, etc

I like your idea of an option. Maybe something that could be toggled under Preferences?

Believe it or not, back in the day when I was working for a post-production studio, I actually ran into situations that had hundreds of lights in a scene (one case was lighting a re-creation of the Titanic). Entire batches of lights would be slaved to nulls (empties) and loaded into the project file. That's where the _001 thing really helped.

Yeah, in the preferences.

Wild. Yeah, having three digits would be useful for a lot of people, just not me. That's where preferences shine

Suffix separator should definitely be configurable - I have no idea where Blender got the idea to use "." as separator, personally I usually use "_" no matter if Blender likes it or not - and if user don't want a separator then it should be possible to set it as empty in settings, if such feature existed.

Agreed. You can write a python script to change the numbering syntax of objects already in the scene, but I don't want to have to run a script every time I make a new object.
