In outliner...

  • double-click a collection : active the collection and select the objects in the collection

  • shift + double-click a collection : add objects in the collection to selection

  • ctrl + double-click the collection : subtract objects in the collection from selection

  • click parent object : select object

  • double-click a parent object : select the parent and children

  • shift + double-click a parent object : add the parent and it's children to selection

  • ctrl + double-click a parent object : subtract the parent and it's children from selection

  • double-click objects with number after the parent :select objects wiout their paren

  • press uparrow key :select selected object's parent

  • hold shift and press uparrow key :add selected object's parent to selection

I just feel selection rule needs to be unified, I have not thought well yet.

Selecting anything in the Outliner is a mess. Also, it's my opinion that the Outliner should start in 'Scene' mode, not 'View Layer'. I've seen 'organizing' with Collections that have no real meaning on hierarchy level.

It's shocking how few Blender artists understand proper scene management.
