Geometry Nodes. Object Data Node.
Objects are just containers for Object Data. Obect data can be Mesh, curves, etc. Geometry.
The only way we can get external geometry into geometry nodes, is by placing an object with that object data into the scene, and then using "Object info" node.
Why not give DIRECT access to that object data, so the user wouldn't have to place an object into the scene?
It would be nice to have a node that directly gets geometry out of object data, without the need to place an object onto the scene with that data:

Great idea! I wonder if it might make a bit more sense to make separate nodes for "Mesh", "Curves", "Point Cloud", "Volume", rather than displaying all the times in the same list.
I don't really see a point in separating them.
Well, mostly just to be consistent with elsewhere in Blender, since I haven't seen a drop-down that combines multiple types of data-blocks. But maybe that would be fine here!
Your issue have to do with the way blender manage data. Blender doesn't have any entity component system, and currently, everything need to be present in the scene in order to exist. I don't know how things will change with the new (prealpha) assets browser. Will it work like unreal where the asset browser can store scenes, sequences, or any type of data that can be referenced by any other object ?
I don't think this has anything to do with an entity component system or not. Node groups can already reference objects and other data-blocks, in which case they will be counted as "used" and not automatically purged with other unused data-blocks.
