Steal music program features
I've used music programs for decades and there's a bunch of standard features for recording that I think could be put straight in 3d programs. I'm sure you could do some of this all ready in Blender, but they've got it so streamlined. Especially for animation (but they're also a good source of inspiration for other things) eg I use these regularly
- Realtime recording, with looping and multiple takes. Different speed realtime recording. Simply hitting record and it recording any dragged value, with 'turn into curve' clean up options.
- "Midi Learn". Right click ANY value and assign to hardware sliders with zero setup. Assign ANY function to any midi button/piano key. Imagine how much quicker animation could be with all the great midi controllers out there.
- Always recording. Some record ALL THE TIME into a rolling buffer. Why not? Bone animation is nothing in memory usage. This is great for constantly puppeting and stumbling across a good movement. You then just hit 'paste last x seconds'
- "Step" recording for auto incrementing timeline per keyframe. Fully keyboardable.
** The ultimate step recorders are 'trackers' which are basically a 100% keyboardable driven timeline. It's amazing how much faster some tasks are with the keyboard. eg having an actual cursor like a text editor, controlled by arrows, which allows you to do things like hitting insert to push all the proceeding keyframe right a bit, hold shift for select, basically all the good things about text editors.
- "Step realtime". Have the timeline pause UNTIL you move a slider or drag a value, then it realtime records until you stop. With loop points and takes, this could be a powerful way to get a more precise realtime input, without it coming out too 'motion capturey'. This is my idea which I don't think exists, but I wish did.
Also I hope Blender can solve the "6dof scenes but editing it with a 2d viewport and 2d mouse" issue. eg, when you're animating you constantly have to look at all three axis before you're sure it's in the right place. Some clever visualisation of depth could solve this. But excellent changes and improvment in 2.8. It definitely should have been called v3, but opensource people are the worst at self marketing :)

I really like this idea. Sounds like it could be possible as a plugin. (I'd also like very much if some DAWs would take a look at blenders interface :) ) In my furthest fetched dreams Blender gets a sequencer and a wave editor and a synth panel in the node editor...
Unless I'm misreading, most of these feature are already available in Blender and have been for years.
Realtime recording : Easily doable. Enable auto-key. Press play. Change a value (move the object, change a shapekey, rotate a bone, etc.). Those value changes are automatically recorded to the timeline. There could be nicer tools for simplifying curves after recording, but the core functionality is already there.
Midi learn : This would require a bit of hardware driver support. Some of this exists a bit with the 3D space navigators, but not quite as much. This should really be a separate proposal.
Always recording : As far as I can tell, this is the same as realtime recording. We already have it.
Step : You can already step through keyframes on a selected object in Blender. Just press the up arrow key.
Step realtime : This sounds lot like autokey. How exactly does it differ from that?
