A polygonal lasso tool to select and mask

Pablo Dobarro developed this fantastic tool:

However since Blender only has box selection and Lasso selections the tool is limited as to how it can be used.

Ideally I think one of the core sculpt tools we need is a clip/trim brush, however this is concept from Zbrush that might not be easily translated to the tools and framework of Blender.

That being said this tool mimics that behavior rather well, with the only caveat being that we don't have the ability to vary the angle of the cut to any angle or shape we desire, having a Lasso tool for curved shapes, and a polygonal lasso tool for hard angles would solve this, if the selection could be mixed i.e. start with a sharp angle, then continue to a curve, then sharp again that would be great, but as a starting point just having a hard angle selection tool would make the cuts much more versatile and the sculpt tools would be closer to be feature ready for any task at hand.

Additionally this tool could be used for face, edge or vertex selection in edit mode as one more option to select parts of a mesh with more control.

Why is this not in Blender yet? And why does it have two downvotes?

I wanted to create the same proposal now, but look like you already posted it. Still weird, only 3 upvotes and 2 downvotes after 5 months. No comment about what is wrong with the proposal. It is now down to the abysses.

I personally don't do hard surface, but for clean up large scans, having a polygonal lasso (or having the usual lasso not behave the same as it is, allowing straight lines) would surely help more than doing eveything in box select and trying to get the right angle with free gimball rotation thanks to my space mouse...

Polygonal Lasso Mask is seriously a great feature that we're lacking right now. Either that or somehow the functionality of a Pen Tool within the Line Mask too, allowing us to add multiple anchor points. But I agree, a polygonal lasso mask tool right now would solve most of the problems when trying to make masks for hard-surface sculpting.
