Open Subdivision Modifier to Industry standard
Update: Marked as "done" because developer.blender.org/D8413 it's done =) Thanks to Piotr Ostrowski (postrowski) !!!
===========================================
Hello,
I want to talk about Blender Subdivision Surface modifier. It is close to industry standard but still lacks options.
I'm working mostly in Modo, but in 3ds Max work too. And I was confusing when I use Blender Subdivision Surface modifier.
To the point:
- Blender have no option for keeping corners sharp. Yes, I can implement crease to edges, but it's a very bad practice because if you want to continue/extrude edge you got bad result.
- UI where "Options" is. It's lack of information, only if I click on list option I can understand that this option is for UV only... So it's need to be reorganized.
My suggestion is look how it work in 3ds max (I think it's most industry standard).
Link to 3ds max help page if needed
And make similar in Blender.

Great! I like this solution, I use creases all the time, and they are great, but often in this situations a simple option for all the object like this would speed thing up!
* @Frederico Martins * I would very much like to have "Crease" vertices, like in Modo
* @meutzitzu * It's not just a Modo thing, vertex creases are already part of OSD (and in fact have been part of the Catmull-Clark algorithm for much longer). Blender just doesn't implement them.
* @matt.heimlich * Well, I mean I first saw them in a Modo tutorial
you know what the funny part is ?
since they conteol how close the mesh is to the cage on the vertex level, and that SUB-D surfaces are basically an itterative approach to 3rd order splines (mathematically, at the limit, a subD is identical to a 3rd order spline)
this means you could potentially have perfect spheres out of cubes
you know how when you subdivide a cube or 4 vert cylinder, you get these slightly bulging outward corners ?
by using the same factors as the NURBS weights for a 3rd order spline (about .345 for cylinders and .707 for sphere corners) I think you could potentially tweak the surface to more closely approximate spheres and cyllinders, etc without needing to use more and more cage geometry
Industry Standard is an eye catching term!
and freakin shortcut to enable/disable it.........
* @XYZS * sortcut to SDS enable/disable like in modo? If so, there is addon blenderartists.org/t/for-modo-user-switching-to-blender-2-8/1145429/388
This would be fantastic i use it all the time in Max
Yap.. this could make life easier
I'd also love to see vertex creasing finally make its way to Blender! It's a really important part of some workflows, and is already a part of the OSD standard.
yes please!
is there a way too save crease sets like in 3ds max ?
