Value to use as mirror.
At the moment, you can use the object as a mirroring for the modifier, this is of course a very useful function, but this relationship sometimes becomes inconvenient when moving the parent object, it is also inconvenient to produce empty for these purposes, in a large project you start to get confused. Also, a useful addition to this idea would be to add a button to set origin to the specified numeric values.

I think at one point they were discussing each modifier having a built in widget instead of using an empty. I have no idea how far along that idea got.
you can just make an empty?
Making an Empty is always a crutch for when you don't want to use the object for more than one mirror modifier, though. Also it's many steps to do for each object where you don't want to or can use the object center. PLus it clogs up the outliner with one additional object per mirror modifier. It's a very good option for when several objects share one axis or you need to be able to animate and rotate the mirror offset from the viewport. It sholdn't be replaced but it really isn't the most elegant solution for all cases.
