In-blender Technique recipes

Say you wish to publish a technique for general use - not through the medium of video, but inside Blender itself. A mechanism which can record and save/publish the keyboard and mouse events, probably with additional text commentary. These can then be "replayed" by yourself and others at a later date - with the obvious requirement that certain events (like entering a filename, vertex selection etc) maybe be overridden.

There is a Command Recorder (Addon). You live and learn. I'm gonna check it out.

"The Command Recorder Addon allows us to record macros in Blender. And not only that, we can save the macro’s to buttons."

This idea has been floating around the community for quite a while now (I remember it being brought up as an idea somewhere around the 2.4x series). It's a solid idea, but implementation and UX have always been nontrivial things to solve.

This is possible with Python. This is essentially what Python does, except without enlisted the keyboard and mouse. However, there is a (somewhat hidden) feature that enables input emulation with Python.

I don't see how this could be better than just learning to write basic scripts.

This is for addon. Nice idea. But here is the problem: you should have exact the same interface, keymap and list of addons, than one, who record it. Exactly the same quick menu, etc-etc…

Also many things needs explanation. Also alternative actions can be much better in other situation.

So this is poor alternative for good video tutorial. And just for replay you can use command recorder and info panel.

Total: Big complex demo system for few very lazy newbies, who will not work in 3d. Because if you are lazy to learning and searching, your work with 3d will be painfull.

* @ Vyacheslav * I wonder if it's possible to record the API calls instead of the keypresses so that the recording can be published as a python script ??

Vyach

* @ammusionist * Check Info panel. It shows API calls. But not all.

* @ammusionist * Recording the API makes sense when the keystroke makes a call.

Thanks for pointing out Command Recorder.

The benefits:

For a newcomer, its a pain to have to refer to a Youtube video for a technique to find out what to do next - it's a constant back and forth. This could be eliminated.

For a pro, they could "Skip" through boiler plate clicks to get to their specific "recipe overriding" work.
