Expose cached fluid speed vector data, in python? as vertex colors? -> warping fluid textures.

When you select "Use Speed Vectors" in the mesh setting of a fluid domain, it has a tool tip: "Caches velocities of mesh vertices..." They are rendered to the camera if we turn on the vector pass, but is there a way to access it though python or as vertex colors? Specifically, I want to implement something like this:

youtube.com/watch or this: reddit.com/r/Simulated/comments/gdukd1/flowoc/

It seems like exposing velocities of fluid vertices would be a first step. Is it already exposed somewhere I have not found yet? Any other thoughts?

To connect with another suggestion, blender.community/c/rightclickselect/6Pfbbc/ I think it would be useful to have the speed of every vector in every object as a color vertex, so we can use that for procedural animations, or in the texture pass... not just as a render pass.
