Automatic view clipping adjustments for the 3d viewport
For large urban scale scenes, I often experience issues with clipping of the 3d viewport camera. Setting different clipping values to avoid artifacts or view clipping up-close or when zoomed out is not a pleasant and fluent workflow experience.
I currently use an addon for this: github.com/kromar/blender_clipping_assistant , but it would be best if this were to be implemented natively for the 3d viewport in order to minimise possible crashes/ performance penalties.

This option should be user controllable as there are effects (like mist) that uses the current clipping and the performance impact it has as it needs a second depsgraph evaluation.
What kind of performance penalties are you referring to?
The trick is that you first need to evaluate the scene, in order to optimize the clipping and after that render the scene with the new clipping values. The provided addon does a similar trick by going over the depsgraph and use the object dimensions. What still needs to go over each object twice. What is not done in the viewport architecture.
