Transition from EEVEE/Workbench to CYCLES
I like the Idea of adobe's tool "Dimension" to merge the viewport with the render engine. While doing changes, the fast feedback of the viewport is used.
When the changes are done, it smoothly transitions from the viewport to the renderer.
I think this could be easily achieved with blender's eevee/workbench and cycles. (At least I hope so...) Especially when two or more GPUs are available in the system, then one could caclulate eevee/workbench and the other's run cycles.
Basically it's just a blending with transparency between the two render engines, triggered through changes or camera movement in the scene.
This way, fast feedback could be achieved, even in very big scenes. Of course, this should be an option, in the case, that only one gpu is available and memory is insufficient.
Take a look at the vimeo link for better quality.

In addition to this I would like it if UI elements like object outlines and 3d cursor and floor grid, etc, would fade away if the mouse hasn't interacted with a viewport in render preview mode for a few seconds.
* @thinsoldier * Yeah, nice addition.
* @thinsoldier * also with a configuration, the user could choose to first fade away the UI elements before fading to cycles output, or to first fade to cycles output before fading away the UI elements.
It looks great on the video, but it may need a bit smoother transition to become less obtrusive and a configuration for the delay time. Cycles could already run before the transition to reduce the initial noise.
MagicaVoxel kind of works like this. I've wanted to propose this but your Gif is perfect. Thank you!
+1 This would make things smoother.
I wonder if a view layer could be set to Cycles for basic fast ray traced elements, combined with the main render of Eevee in compositor. Of course, I cannot wait for the compositor to be live in the viewport.
