Increase number of recognized mouse buttons
According to the API documentation ( docs.blender.org/api/current/bpy_types_enum_items/event_type_items.html ), it seems that Blender currently supports up to 4 extra buttons (up to "Button7mouse")
It would be great if Blender could support way more mouse buttons than that, given how many buttons some gaming mouses have nowadays.
Edit: the idea is to not rely on the mouse software at all

How common is it for mice to have more than 7 buttons? Could you please point to some specific models? Curious how this works.
I wish we could support horizontal scrolling too.
Hey Pablo, I have put together two surveys on that matter, and among the most popular mouses are the Logitech G502 (7 extra buttons), Logitech MX Master Series (2 to 4 extra buttons) and Razer Basilisk (5 extra buttons). For my personal case, I am using an Corsair Ironclaw (7 extra buttons) which I keep tweaking to optimize my keymap workflow.
Another reason I am pushing this idea is because I am currently designing a mouse/addon specifically made for Blender power users. Having the API to support more buttons would be an absolute game changer.
You can already change the side buttons of your gaming mouse with the software that came with your mouse. Usually, it allows you to customize all the buttons of your mouse. Then, inside Blender, you can modify the keymap hotkeys as you wish.
Possible but not to practical.
If you're Windows and proprietary software like Razer Synapse or any other, you're locked to the OS, application and so on, what means that you need export settings and re-install stuff later, what causes problems and limitations, in Windows sometimes you need to find folder in AppData and etc. In my case, I have a Razer Chroma, and I'm obliged to use Synapse 2 since 3 do not support the hardware (no idea why).
LInux based systems are not too different since you need to export profiles from Input Reamapper (or other software) or backup things from .config folder.
So, put the shortcuts inside blender, make it portable to any OS and useful in any hardware where you plug the mouse or have a similar mouse.
I'm already doing that with my Corsair mouse, but it's not practical. I'm proposing this idea specifically to eliminate the hassle of setting up keys across multiple software platforms and using complex macro workarounds.
