Multiple Reference Image Importing

The bpy.ops.object.empty_image_add() operator, which handles the importing of Reference and Background images in the Add menu can only handle adding one image at a time. Shift-Selecting is still enabled, but only one image gets added. This seems counterintuitive when compared to other file selectors, such as the .obj importer, which can import multiple files at once.

This could be handled with a add-on, but having it as a native feature would improve the UX of those who make use of Blender's reference image system in many use cases. One primary example of multiple reference images can be seen in modelling, where users can use multiple images for front views, side views, etc.
