Add "human readable depth" as an option in the Pass dropdown menu of the render result image editor.

Nobody can see this. Many noobs would like to export a depth map to photoshop to use with its lens blur filter or for generating the new 3d Facebook photo things.

Many noobs struggle with the node editor for materials and fear going into the compositing nodes before they understand the material nodes.

It's called "normalized zdepth", you can also make it yourself through compositing nodes, just use a normalize node and pass the zdepth through it.

But it would be nice to have that out of the box indeed.

* @-L0Lock- * Agree. It would be nice to have checkboxes like «show normalized» and «export normalized». Show is on by default, export is off by default for exr or floatPNG and off for JPG/PSD and other LDR/lowBit formats.

* @ Vyacheslav * No it should really be as an independent pass, not extra options over an already existing pass, its making things over complicated for no advantages.

* @-L0Lock- * but I assume, that two dept-pass will confuse newbies, won`t they?

Lauloque

* @ Vyacheslav * Newbies don't use passes at all, they don't even know how rendering works and I bet they never hear about what are render passes until they learn them the hard way.

And in any cases, seperating the two zdepths is more clear. Normalizing a zdepth is not just a display option, it's an actual modification onf the initial zdepth, it's not the same anymore. It is technically a different pass so it makes sense to treat it as is.

Also it's easyier to handle two passes rather that having one pass an be obliged to do several aditionnal clicks just to obtain the other one.

* @-L0Lock- * Thanks to photoshop's lens blur filter a lot of people are aware of them for many years now (in my experience) and since the recent facebook 3d photo thing a heck of a lot more people are aware of them.

And while many people don't know what "render passes" are, I've never met a graphic designer who did not know they could ask me to send over renders of just the shadows, just the "tight space shadows" (ambient occlusion), just the reflections, etc.

* @-L0Lock- * Perhaps an additional render pass option of "depth (visible)" in the view layer panel next to "Z" .... consider also renaming "Z" to "depth" since it's called depth in several other locations.... or change all those other locations to say Z .... but Blender uses Z for the vertical axis while the x/y axis is usually what's on people's mind when they think of depth so I support calling everything "depth" instead of "Z"
