Enable Denoise for Baking

Update: This feature has been added in the Cycles-X re-write and is in Blender since 3.0

As you know, Blender has a Denoiser (or even 2) for your rendered images. But if you bake images, you have no denoise options. So:

Vote for the Denoise Option in the bake panel!

For example baking lightmaps is a common thing for game engines or model exports, and those need not too much samples, but should be noisefree.

Baking in blender in general would need some... love! But as this is my first proposal, I want to start with something smaller ;) - some of my bug reports got closed, because they seem to be more feature request.

For those like me who find it frustrating how every feature is geared up for rendering and the possibility you might need something for another purpose is ignored, here is an add-on that allows you to bake and denoise lightmaps. It makes the entire process incredibly easy:

* @JRRRRRR * can this be use only for baking AO?

Hi it says the development status is done but I cannot find the option in blender.

Time to Update: this feature as I descriibed it, is meanwhile in Blender 3.0. This feature has been added in the Cycles-X re-write. If you bake a texture (which is still not very intuitive, but this is another thread) the denoising settings are used, which are used in the rendering.

The status of this can now be set to "Done". If I can do it myself, give me hint. I could not find it.

Yeah, due to the lack of bake denoising, Blender is so far behind compared to other 3D DCC's , pretty much all the other players in the industry has denoising for their bakes now... You need to bake it overnight just to have quality that you can get in 10 minutes with other 3D software now...

Why isn't this a thing?

I don't want to code this but it seems a needed feature

Baking uses the render settings, there should only be one place in the UI for denoise settings. Baking denoise is a known limitation at the moment. From what I understand, baking is undergoing a refactor at the moment to make it work correctly with the new custom AOVs and light groups.

Is there any news in this department? My bakes are very noisy compared to renders.

So it seems in 2018 the dev team already worked on it, but never finished: developer.blender.org/D3099

I want it too!)

yes please, manually denoising the baked texture is quite the hassle right now

+1 would be great for baking textures with caustics In the meantime there is also a standalone commandline tool which uses Intel ODIN denoiser: github.com/DeclanRussell/IntelOIDenoiser/releases/

That's one thing that could be done, but I think the entire baking workflow is a bit roundabout and could be polished and made easier to use. I talk more about that, as well as other suggestions for improving Blender, here:

Suggestions for Blender 2.9, 3 improvements goals

I feel like denoising light bakes might also solve the animation problem, like jittering in denoised animations, because it's a still bake. It's like how there can be discrepancies in a still frame because of denoising and you don't notice because it's a still frame.

my pc is a potato, i need this =/

this would be awesome

If this was implemented, it would probably be a good idea to also add an option to choose between the old denoiser and the AI denoiser

Josephbburg

* @Zach Hixson * The AI denoiser is in compositer. Maybe there should be an option to run the bake through the compositor? I don't think it's easy to do this at the moment... you have to load the bake result back in as an image.

* @Josephbburg * In recent Blender Today livestream they discussed yet another denoiser that is coming to Blender and how new UI is needed to allow people to choose they one they want to use from many places in Blender. So I expect eventually the AI denoiser will be available outside of compositer.
