Remove unnecessarily re-clicking the middle mouse button when switching between camera movements.
What if we didn't have to release the Middle Mouse Button (MMB) button while switching to the other camera movement modes?
The experience would be:
- I hold the MMB to rotate around my focus point
- While still holding the MMB down I can hold CTRL to start zooming in.
- While still holding MMB I can let go of CTRL to continue to rotate the camera
- I can the hold down SHIFT to start panning.
I think this simple change can reduce the amount of clicking necessary to perform within blender significantly! In this simple example I reduced the number of clicks from 6 to 3! That's 50% savings! Less clicking means less strain on the fingers and perhaps even a more smooth experience.

not saying it's a bad idea- but based on how modal operators currently work I would not hold my breath. what you're suggesting would require a fundamental re-think on how modal operators are triggered and ended, not just the
view3d.rotateet al operatorsWe could put it into a new mode like how shift+tilde goes into a fly/walk mode with its own keyboard shortcuts. I wouldn't mind pressing shift+tilde and then tilde again to have an orbit mode where I don't need to keep my stiff middle mouse pressed in order to orbit and then toggle ctrl to zoom and and shift to pan and then 1 left click to leave that mode.
