Make Blender’s Compositor a True Motion‑Graphics Engine: Extend Geometry Nodes Integration
Blender 4.4–4.5 unified many Shader and Geometry Nodes in the Compositor (Math, Vector Math, procedural textures, Blackbody, Float Curve, Image Info, etc.), giving us stronger tools for post and motion work. For serious motion graphics, though, the compositor still lacks key capabilities that Geometry Nodes already provides. developer.blender
This is a concise feature request you can adapt for Blender’s RCS, forums, or GitHub.
Feature Request: Extend Compositor with Geometry Nodes–Style Data, Attribute, and Motion‑Graphics Nodes
Summary
Blender has already ported many Geometry/Shader nodes into the Compositor. To make it a true motion‑graphics engine, please extend it with more Geometry Nodes–style data types, attribute handling, and motion‑graphics helpers, adapted to an image‑based context.
Motivation
Motion designers increasingly rely on Geometry Nodes for:
- Procedural patterns and animations
- Attribute‑driven color, scale, and motion
- Instance‑based systems (particles, tiles, logos)
The compositor is still mostly used for post (glow, grade, blur), even though many effects would benefit from GN‑style logic, attributes, and field operations directly in compositing. This forces artists to build motion in GN, render, then composite, or use complex workarounds in the compositor.
Bringing more GN capabilities into the compositor would:
- Enable more effects to be done fully in post
- Reduce render/bake overhead
- Strengthen Blender’s position for motion design and 2D/3D hybrid work
Requested Features
1. Add Missing Data Types and Logic Nodes
- Integer value and Integer Math (add, subtract, multiply, divide, modulo, compare, etc.)
- Boolean value and Boolean Math (And, Or, Not, Xor, etc.)
- String / Text nodes: basic text input plus operations like Match String (Starts With, Ends With, Contains) and Format String
Use cases: animated counters/timers, frame‑based logic, conditional effects, text‑driven titles and data visualizations.
2. Introduce an Attribute System for Images
- A “Capture Attribute” node for images: store a computed channel (float/vector) at a specific point and reuse it later via an attribute socket.
- Support attribute sockets in node groups to pass custom per‑pixel data cleanly.
-
Allow multiple named attributes per image (e.g.,
dist_field,motion_vectors_custom,pattern_id).
Use cases: compute a distance field or pattern once, then reuse it for color, blur, displacement, and glare; build modular, reusable comps without duplicating sub‑trees.
3. Add Field‑Like and Motion‑Graphics Helper Nodes
- Random Value node (matching GN): outputs Float/Integer/Boolean/Vector with seed, min/max, distribution.
- Dedicated Map Range and Normalize nodes.
-
Coordinate helpers:
- Polar Coordinates (Cartesian ↔ Polar)
- Radial Field (distance/angle from center)
- Grid Field (row/column indices, cell centers)
- A “Spline Parameter–like” node for image space (distance along a path/shape).
Use cases: randomized animation per region, radial/grid‑based animations (pulsing rings, scanning lines, modular UI), path‑based animations (progress bars, loaders).
4. Add Instance / Element‑Style Operations for Images
- Distribute Points on Mask/Image : generate point positions from alpha/luma or a mask, with density, jitter, seed, and min‑distance controls.
- Instance on Points (2D) : stamp shapes/logos over generated points, with per‑instance control over scale, rotation, and color driven by attributes/fields.
- Vector Field Warp (2D Set Position analog) : warp image pixels using a vector field for motion‑graphics distortions and glitches.
Use cases: particle‑like logo reveals, animated grids of tiles/icons, glitch and warp effects driven by procedural vector fields.
Benefits
- More effects can be done entirely in the compositor, reducing render and bake time.
- Cleaner, more modular node trees for motion graphics.
- Stronger integration between Geometry Nodes and compositor workflows.
- Better positioning of Blender as an all‑in‑one tool for 3D + motion design.
Note: This request does not ask for full 3D geometry in the compositor, but for the data types, attribute system, and higher‑level helpers that make Geometry Nodes so powerful for motion graphics, adapted to an image‑based context.
