Set shape key to default shape in some easier way

Currently, to my understanding, we have to transfer a shape key or "join as shapes", then select the desired key we'd want to be the new default shape of the mesh in question, then set its weight to 1, and finally delete all shape keys to make the said key (at weight = 1) the default.

It is feasible, sure, but convoluted to the point of counter-reverse-ness, which is the exact opposite of straightforwardness.

Shouldn't be a hard thing to implement but would help n00bs like me getting a little less unfamiliar with Blender.

The only reason I haven't upvoted is because i've never used shape keys and know nothing abou them. Could you post a video showing a use case for setting default shape key along with all the steps you've described?
